Caritas Switzerland and HEKS help 28,000 refugees in Pakistan
Emergency aid for displaced persons from Swat valley and neighbouring districts
In the last few days and weeks around half a million people have left the Swat district and neighbouring areas to flee from the fighting between the Taliban and the Pakistan army. They are seeking refuge in the districts of Mardan, Swabi, Peshawar and Nowshera which are already harbouring some 700,000 internally displaced persons. Caritas Switzerland and the Aid Organisation of the Protestant Churches of Switzerland (HEKS) have joined forces to invest 500,000 Swiss francs in an emergency aid project for the refugees in Pakistan.
28,000 people in the region of Mardan (North-West Frontier Province) are receiving food parcels containing flour, rice, lentils, oil, powdered milk and salt, as well as towels, soap, toothbrushes and other toiletries. Pans, crockery and cutlery are also being distributed. The aid parcels are aimed at displaced persons outside the official camps who are staying with relatives or who have put their tents up temporarily in parks and along the streets. These groups of refugees are in a particularly precarious situation and are desperately reliant on aid. The project partner is the Anatolian Development Foundation (ADP), an experienced Turkish aid organisation with which Caritas and HEKS have been working for many years in Pakistan, Iran and Turkey.
