Chèques-emploi – social security for household workers
Canton of Vaud

There are more and more paid employment opportunities in private households, doing jobs like cleaning, gardening, helping children with homework, nursing the sick, childcare and similar work. These jobs are the only source of income for a growing number of people. As a general rule, the people who do these kinds of jobs have no social insurance. They are at a particular disadvantage if they have an accident or fall ill as they will get no social security payments while they are unable to work. This state of affairs is not easy for the employers either. Bureaucracy and complicated administrative processes are often blamed for putting people off from registering for social security contributions.
Chèques-emploi proposes a simple solution and offers an administrative service for employment contracts in private households, handling the pay slip and formalities in connection with social security contributions and tax at source. This project also plays a part in informing employers and employees about their rights and obligations.
HEKS decided to get involved in this project in 2005, its main aim being to help those who work in this highly insecure sector of the economy. It is obvious that this system meets a need, both for the employers and for the public corporations which thereby obtain the means to crack down on illegal employment.
