Generating income for the rural population and integrating the Roma community
Kosovo

Kosovo took the final step to independence and statehood in 2008. Kosovo is now recognised by over 70 states. Progress is being made with the establishment of government structures. Many problems still remain, however, such as corruption in government structures. There is also far too little work available and too few earning opportunities. The social and economic integration of minorities, especially the Roma, also remains a major challenge over the coming years.
Aims, points of focus, initiatives:
HEKS is focusing on the following points in the 2009-2012 programme:
- Development of rural communities: Farming families and agricultural producers’ organisations are given support with the production and marketing of their products. Apart from agricultural production and marketing, however, small commercial enterprises and service providers are also to be promoted. These are being given easier access to investment loans in particular.
- Integrating the Roma community: Conditions for the Roma and Ashkali communities in Kosovo are catastrophic. Tens of thousands have already left the country bound for Serbia or western Europe. Many of them are sent back from western Europe. There are virtually no permanent jobs for Roma people. HEKS therefore concentrates its efforts on promoting vocational training, jobs and income for Roma youth.
- Total programme cost 2012: CHF 306 000.-
A donation of 100 Swiss francs can improve the conditions of the Roma communities in Kosovo.
