  • HEKS increases assistance for flood victims in Pakistan to 500,000 francs

  • Pakistan

  • HEKS, the Swiss Interchurch Aid organisation, is providing 500,000 francs of emergency assistance for the people affected by the floods in northwest Pakistan. HEKS has been involved in Pakistan for five years in collaboration with its partner organisation, Anatolian Development Foundation (ADF).

In the initial phase, HEKS is distributing basic foodstuffs, cooking equipment and hygiene items to 3,300 families (approx. 25,000 people) in Malakand District, south of the Swat Valley. The Malakand region, which has been badly affected by the disaster, is very poor and has yet to receive any assistance. Relief supplies are able to be transported in the region using trucks for fast distribution. Local distribution to the families is undertaken using small vans.

Last year, HEKS provided support for internal refugees in Malakand District in collaboration with ADF when some two million people fled from the military conflict in Swat District. Following the severe earthquake in the Pakistan-administered area of Kashmir in 2005, HEKS was involved in the reconstruction of schools and water supply systems again working with ADF.
