  • New school buildings and water supplies following the earthquake

  • Pakistan

  • The severe 2005 earthquake destroyed over 5000 schools in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and in the north-western provinces. HEKS was quick to respond and immediately erected 2500 temporary tin huts, 507 school tents with heating facilities and 20 marquees for makeshift health centres.

HEKS has continued to work since the immediate aftermath and is committed to rebuilding schools and restoring water supplies. HEKS is rebuilding 15 schools for 2000 children and restoring 32 pipelines supplying water to 20,000 people.

HEKS makes a point of insisting on earthquake-resistant designs. This is why it only approves single-storey buildings.

    Aims:

To provide proper school buildings so that children and young people in the earthquake-prone area can resume their education. HEKS has set itself the goal of rebuilding fourteen to fifteen schools.

    Roadmap:

    • Identification of requirements
    • Technical planning
    • Award of building contracts to local construction firms
    • Detailed planning, consulting and oversight of construction work
    • Courses on promoting hygiene.

  • Total project cost 2010:   CHF 500 000.-

A donation of 50 Swiss francs is enough to guarantee a supply of clean water for one person.
